Earlier this year we retired our old track (one of the original roller derby tracks…oh yeah it was OLD) and our fabulous and dedicated production team built us a new much more sturdy track in it’s place. A track reinforced with a LOT of steel. On the new track we didn’t slide everywhere and our lap times got a LOT faster…That being said, when we fell…we fell harder! During team practice we were doing a fast jammer drill and I fell DOWN the track and not up, I am on the tall side so that gives me a LONG way down. I wasn’t tripped…wasn’t nailed by an awesome hit…nope didn’t land on a skate. Just fell. I sat out for a couple of jams and put ice on it and completed practice. It hurt like hell but…it’s what we do. The next day it was even fine, bruising and a little track rash. On the second day while I work it started to swell and got extremely painful, my thigh doubled in size and turned that nice purpley black. Walking, sitting, and standing were OUT of the question. At home that night I almost passed out from the pain so I had my husband drive me to the ER, where they ran some tests and sent me home with painkillers and an ice pack. They said the pressure inside my skin would stop the bleeding naturally. *gag* I missed several days of work…being a school teacher and being on painkillers in not a good combination!
